"Mending Wall"

"Good fences make good neighbors," says Robert Frost in his poem, "Mending Wall."

Now that we have snow etiquette down, we're on to fence etiquette. What should we do if our backyard fence is looking a little shabby? (This isn't a picture of our fence, by the way). Phil's question: if we mention it to the neighbors first, do we have to pay for it?

Is it your fence or their fence?

It's snowing here!

Do you know how to determine that? If the pretty side faces you, it is yours. If the pretty side faces them, it is theirs. If it is even on both sides, it is a good neighbor fence and when it was put up, the price was probably shared by the owners at the time. That is how it was explained to us by our realtor when we purchased our home.
